It was in 2019 that Extraa truly started. After 5 years of friendship, sharing beers and philosophical debates on the couch, Antoine and Alix decided to merge Alix's songwriting with Antoine's rhythmic expertise to create Extraa. To accomplish their mission, they recruited Pedro on bass and Thomas on guitar to propel the classiest songs of the indie game.
In 2020, their debut album "Baked," recorded in Alexis Fugain's studio (known for working with Biche, Agar Agar, Gaetan Nonchalant, Polycool, etc.), combined the elegance of the 60s with modern arrangements. The album was released under the Requiem pour un Twister label.
One pandemic later, Extraa's inspirations are now drawn from the 90s, the cool nonchalance of Blur and Eels, the sophistication of Air, the serene strength of Courtney Barnett, and the erudition of The Coral. However, they haven't abandoned the charm of the swinging London's choir and arrangements.
Unfazed by three lockdowns, they successively secluded themselves in Yvelines at Claudio Studio (again with Alexis Fugain, their own Andrew Loog Oldham) and then at Red House Studio with Hugo Zeitoun (known for working with Kids Return and Mathieu Chedid). As a result of this Stockholm syndrome, their second album has just been born. It consists of ten tracks, weighs at least four hits, and its co-parents have decided to name it "Out of Phase."
Ten skeletons were recorded live and then enriched with a string quartet, choirs, piano, harp, Juno 60, and various percussion instruments. Here, we oscillate between savory/sweet, pop, psychedelic, and alternative rock. Two guests bring their musical sensitivity to "Out of Phase": Loic Fleury, the lead singer of Isaac Delusion, for the cover of Niagara's "Quand la ville dort," and Naomi Greene on harp for the beautiful original track "Jay."
With these tracks primarily mixed analogically by Hugo Zeitoun with Alix's assistance, "Out of Phase" embraces an organic and vibrant sound that sometimes allows for imperfections, just like Extraa. This second album is a leap towards maturity and a desire to surprise. Alix's voice addresses the listener with emotion, revealing her past, present, loves, and friendships through moments of doubt and moments of confidence/awareness. It is through her songwriting that she externalizes her hypersensitivity and finally feels "Somewhere."
